Introduction

Songcast for Windows will allow your PC to send audio to any Songcast receiver in your home. When Songcast is switched on, any audio that is produced by any application running on your PC will be sent to selected Songcast receivers. For example, the audio from iTunes, Spotify, Internet Explorer can now be sent to any Linn DS in your home.

  • Follow the on screen instructions in the installer program

Uninstalling

  • Select "Songcast" in the list of programs and click the "Uninstall" button
  • Follow the on screen instructions in the uninstall window

Updating

Songcast for Windows can be configured to automatically check for new software updates. Checking for available updates can also be performed manually as described in the "Advanced" section below. Alternatively, Songcast can be updated by manually downloading the installation packages from the download page and installing them using the method described in the Installing section above.

Operation

The general operation of Songcast is intended to be very simple and, largely, there should be little interaction with the software.

The Songcast status bar icon

After installing Songcast, the Songcast icon should appear in the status bar area of your screen:

This says that Songcast is switched off. When Songcast is switched on, the icon will change to show:

Clicking the Songcast icon will show the Songcast menu:

This menu is intended to provide access to the most common day-to-day operations involved in using Songcast:

Turn Linn Songcast On/Off

When Songcast is turned on, your PC will redirect the audio away from its internal speakers and it will be Songcasted across your home network. When Songcast is turned off, your PC will revert to playing any audio through the internal speakers.

Songcast will need to be turned on each time when returning from computer shutdown/hibernation.

Reconnect Selected Receivers

See the General use section for more information

Open Linn Songcast Preferences…

This will open the preference pane for Songcast.

The Songcast preferences pane

The Songcast preferences can be displayed using two mechanisms:

  • Selecting "Open Linn Songcast Preferences..." from the Songcast status bar icon menu
  • Selecting "Songcast" from the Windows Control Panel

General use

Songcast On/Off button

This turns Songcast on and off, performing the same operation as in the Songcast status bar icon menu.

Show Linn Songcast status in the menu bar

This will show/hide the Songcast status bar icon.

Songcast receiver list

This will show a list of Songcast receivers that are available on your home network. Receivers can be selected to receive the audio from the PC by checking their box in this list. When a receiver is checked, its current status will be shown, as can be seen in the screenshot. The possible states for a receiver are:

  • Connected - The receiver is fully connected and ready to receive audio
  • Connecting - The receiver is preparing to receive audio
  • Disconnected - The receiver is available on the network but is currently being used for something else, for example, listening to internet radio
  • Unavailable - The receiver is not currently available on the network
  • Songcast Off - Songcast is currently turned off
Reconnect Selected Receivers

Linn systems can be used to play music from many different sources, e.g. Playlist, Radio, or external devices such as the LP12, so the Songcast source is just one of many possible sources. As stated above, receivers that are selected, available on the network but are being used for some other purpose are in the "Disconnected" state. Clicking this button will ensure that all Songcast receivers that are disconnected are reconnected so that they are ready receive the audio from the PC.

Advanced use

Network Settings
Subnet

This drop down box can be used to selected the network subnet on which Songcast will operate. The majority of users will only have a single subnet in their homes and will not need to change this.

Unicast/Multicast

This allows the user to switch the Songcast protocol between using unicast and multicast UDP. The majority of users will never need to change this from unicast.

Multicast Channel

This is the channel on which multicast Songcast will operate and must be unique on your network. To select a new value, simply click the "New" button. The majority of users will never need to change this setting (only needed if there is a channel conflict between two songcast senders).

Latency

On some poor networks, the delivery of the audio data can be delayed, resulting in audio dropouts during playback. This latency parameter can be increased in order to compensate for such delays and avoid such dropouts.

Troubleshooting

Known Issues

I cannot install Songcast on my Windows XP or Windows Vista computer

Songcast is currently supported on Windows 7 only.

My system experiences audio dropouts when using Songcast

On some poor networks, delivery of the audio data to the DS is not as timely as it needs to be. In this case, the "Latency" parameter in the advanced tab of the Songcast preferences can be increased to compensate for this. If increasing the latency does not fix the problem, the only current solution is to improve the network.

Songcast crashes when exiting sleep/hibernation mode

This is an occasional issue that we are aware of. Please restart Songcast and everything should continue as normal.

When Songcast starts, I get an error dialog saying "There is no disk in the drive"

Again, this is a very rare issue that we have seen and are investigating. When the window appears, clicking the "Cancel" or "Continue" buttons will dismiss the dialog and Songcast will then operate as normal.

I cannot see my DS in the Songcast Preferences tab

Press the REFRESH button, if your Linn DS('s) do not appear:-

1. Check the Advanced TAB - Network settings that the correct Network connection is used

2. On Konfig, check under Sources, that the Songcast<Songcast> source is Visible

3. Press the REFRESH button
